Assistant Professor

About the Position: Assistant Professor, Chemistry.  Two (2) full-time, tenure-track positions beginning September 16, 2009 to be recruited from the following areas: one in analytical chemistry, one in bioorganic chemistry. Candidates with interdisciplinary interests are strongly encouraged to apply.
About the Department: WWU consistently ranks among the top public comprehensive universities in the West and its chemistry and biochemistry programs are among the strongest of their kind in the country. The 17-member department of chemistry offers B.S and M.S. degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, with the former certified by the ACS. WWU is a primarily undergraduate institution committed to excellence in both teaching and research. The department has state-of-the-art facilities with 8500 sq. ft. of dedicated research space and a large portfolio of modern instrumentation. Current external grant support averages $1M annually. Members of the department are also active in the development of new educational materials, textbooks, and innovative teaching methods. The Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Center (AMSEC), a $1.2M program founded in 2007, brings together faculty and students from Chemistry, Engineering Technology, Geology, and Physics to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations, and operates a shared, open access Materials Characterization Laboratory. Position Responsibilities:
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in field of specialization and in general chemistry
  • Participate in student advisement and departmental committees and activities
  • Direct student research projects including the presentation and publication of research
  • Write extramural grant proposals in support of research and curriculum improvement
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field required by time of appointment
  • Required area of specialty: either analytical or bioorganic chemistry
  • Strong record of or potential for effective teaching
  • Strong record of or potential for scholarship and ability to develop an externally funded research program involving undergraduate and M.S. students
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student body
